Introduction
Mohini Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of the month of Vaishakh. All Ekadashi fasts are dedicated to Lord Vishnu, but Mohini Ekadashi carries special importance. It is believed that observing this fast destroys sins, purifies the soul, and opens the path toward liberation.
Mythological Background
The story of Mohini Ekadashi is linked with the Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean). During the churning, a fierce dispute arose between the devas and the asuras over sharing the nectar of immortality (amrit). To protect the nectar and to ensure dharma prevailed, Lord Vishnu assumed the enchanting form of Mohini. He tricked the asuras and distributed the nectar only among the devas, granting them immortality.
This divine event is remembered through the observance of Mohini Ekadashi. It symbolizes the message that Lord Vishnu always protects truth and dharma. The vrat is believed to free devotees from illusion, greed, and attachment.
