Introduction

In Hinduism, Chaturmas is considered a very sacred period. It begins on Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi (Devshayani Ekadashi) and ends on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi (Devuthani Ekadashi). These four months — Ashadh, Shrawan, Bhadra, and Ashwin — are collectively known as Chaturmas.

Spiritually, this time is described as the resting period of Lord Vishnu. Devotees observe vrata (fasts), japa (chanting), tapa (penance), dana (charity), satsang, meditation, and self-discipline, which are considered especially fruitful during these months.

Religious Significance of Chaturmas

Vishnu’s Rest and Awakening

On Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi, Lord Vishnu is believed to begin his four-month rest on the serpent Sheshnaag in the ocean of milk. He awakens on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi (Haribodhini Ekadashi). Hence, this period is called Deva-Shayana Kala (God’s resting time).

Restriction on Auspicious Ceremonies

Since the deities are believed to be asleep, auspicious rituals like marriage, housewarming, upanayan (sacred thread ceremony), and new house construction are generally avoided. Scriptures advise that this period should be devoted to spiritual discipline and self-purification.

Enhanced Spiritual Merit

Any act of worship, fasting, chanting, meditation, or charity during Chaturmas yields results that are said to be thousands of times greater than on normal days. References to this can be found in the Mahabharata and the Padma Purana.
