Introduction
Vedic astrology is an ancient and profound science that seeks to understand different aspects of human life through cosmic influences. It does not only study the position of planets in a birth chart but also analyzes how these planets influence life over time. For this reason, the system of planetary dasha and antardasha holds a central place in Vedic astrology.
A birth chart reveals a person’s nature, abilities, opportunities, and challenges. However, it is the dasha system that explains when the influence of a particular planet becomes active in life. Because of this planetary timing, people may experience periods of success, struggle, financial growth, relationship changes, or personal transformation.
The dasha system divides life into different time cycles, each ruled by a specific planet. Understanding these cycles helps individuals interpret life events, prepare for challenges, and make better decisions at the right time.
What is the Dasha System?
In Vedic astrology, a dasha refers to a planetary period during which a particular planet becomes dominant in influencing a person’s life. Among several dasha systems described in classical texts, the most widely used is the Vimshottari Dasha system.
The Vimshottari system is based on a total cycle of 120 years, which is distributed among the nine planets. Each planet governs a specific duration within this cycle and influences different aspects of life during its period.
The duration of each planetary dasha is as follows:
Ketu Dasha – 7 years
Venus (Shukra) Dasha – 20 years
Sun (Surya) Dasha – 6 years
Moon (Chandra) Dasha – 10 years
Mars (Mangal) Dasha – 7 years
Rahu Dasha – 18 years
Jupiter (Brihaspati) Dasha – 16 years
Saturn (Shani) Dasha – 19 years
Mercury (Budh) Dasha – 17 years
These dasha periods begin according to the nakshatra (lunar constellation) in which the Moon is positioned at the time of birth. From that point onward, the planetary periods continue sequentially throughout life.
What is Antardasha?
Within every major dasha (Mahadasha), there are smaller sub-periods known as Antardasha. These sub-periods refine and modify the effects of the main planetary period.
For example, if someone is experiencing Venus Mahadasha, it will contain several antardashas such as Venus–Sun, Venus–Moon, Venus–Mars, Venus–Rahu, and others. During these phases, the combined influence of two planets becomes active.
This means that life events are often shaped by the interaction between the major planet and the sub-period planet.
Some common examples include:
Venus Mahadasha + Mercury Antardasha → progress in education, communication, creativity, and business
Saturn Mahadasha + Rahu Antardasha → challenges, responsibilities, or major life transitions
Jupiter Mahadasha + Moon Antardasha → family happiness, wisdom, emotional stability
Mars Mahadasha + Sun Antardasha → courage, leadership, and new opportunities
